Stuttering / weak performance on Samsung Galaxy S

Postby jcape on Tue Jul 13, 2010 10:44 am

Hi, I installed the Jasuto Android app on my Samsung Galaxy S and the performance is unsatisfying. The sound is stuttering and the UI is very slow. Since the Galaxy S is one of the fastest handsets available I'm wondering if this is a specific Problem only on this phone. Is there any way to speed it up or even get it run smooth without stuttering. I tried the "simple bass" and "tilt Theremin" scenes, but the result was always a stuttering sound.

Also the UI control buttons are very small, even though the Galaxy S features a 4" display. Is the resolution of 800x480 supported? Android version is 2.1
Please help. Thanks

The hardware is certainly more than enough to run Jasuto smoothly. I've heard several people complaining about Samsung's custom UI (TouchWiz), saying that it negatively effects some apps and even the OS itself.

Unfortunately, the only Android device that I have access to is a Nexus One and all the Jasuto 1.2 scenes run fine on it.

I'd recommend installing a vanilla version of Android on your device, if that's something you're not willing to do, then email me and I'll give you a refund...

I will keep it. Maybe the Samsung Update to Android 2.2 will bring a better performance for me. Any way I want to support your good work on Jasuto.

Could you please give some advice how to install the Audio Unit plugin on the MAC Snow Leopard for Logic.
Many Thanks

I found easy instructions and a video on how to disable TouchWiz on the Samsung Fascinate:

Alas since I run ADW Launcher, disabling TW wasn't an option. Jasuto is still unusably laggy. But, next time I have some time to mess with it I'll switch to the different launchers and try again.

thanks for writing cool software!

Jasuto uses Opengl to render everything which is the same library that all the 3d games use... Have you tried running any 3d games on that phone? If a 3d game runs smoothly then it's probably not the graphics.

I have bad performance on a Galaxy S as well. Stuttering, audio 'clicks' and the occasional crash/lockup on launch. 3d games run fine.

Touchwiz can't be easily disabled on the Galaxy S. And AFAIK Installing another launcher doesn't actually disable it, it's still running in the background. I hope Froyo will fix it.

T-mobile is sending OTA updates to fix issues on the "Vibrant" (Galaxy S). I just got the patch and am installing Jasuto again. I'll post if the issues have been resolved. I'm hopeful, as my device already seems snappier.

good news! With T-mobile's OTA update Jasuto is now usable on the Vibrant/Galaxy S. Specifically, the echoAlive sketch worked. My phone now lists firmware 2.1-update1, build number Elcair.UVJI6.

It's not 100%, though. It stutters slightly but noticeably every second or so. Considering my primary use for Jasuto, mellow chords and simple ambiance, I don't think this will be an issue. For what it's worth the usage meter was about 45% during echoAlive.

(During first launch, the app was 100% unresponsive. Menus and the cursor were on the screen, and the cursor spun normally, but nothing responded. When I did a Force Close, the FC dialog also froze... I did a hard reboot. Considering I'd just done a rather substantial twiddling of the firmware, I'm not going to worry about it.)

(Is there a better place to post these bugs? They seem Android-only, and maybe Galaxy S only.)

here's a few things I've noted:

- the screen blanks if you don't touch it for a few seconds

- the "click, hold and drag" operation to select nodes is hard to do. Starting out, 14/15 times I wind up scrolling the screen. After a few minutes practice I can do it about 50% of the time. It seems to want fast double touch.

- following the manual*. After making a Sin node, a speaker, and connecting them I hear... nothing. It clicks randomly every second or so. This might be related to the above note with the demo echoSomething patch. Saw node works, as does Square.

- I had JuiceDefender and Tasker running. After turning them off, I still get the same results.

- Sin works, if you adjust the FM. Hmm.

- after a few minutes, the clicking seems to be much rarer. I turned on Tasker and got a bunch of clicks.

I'll mess with it some more.

I wrote the code to support double-tapping with a pretty average tap-delay, you should use that instead of the long-presses.
